The Let’s Cook programme is an exciting mix of kitchen based learning and industry visits, as well as self-esteem and confidence building workshops.
For two days a week over ten weeks, eight participants gain transferrable skills which develop teamwork, confidence, assertiveness, work ethic and communication. Healthy eating is promoted and practical culinary skills are taught, including how to select raw ingredients and how to prepare, cook and serve food. It also covers 2 certificated vocational courses: Food Hygiene & and the industry standard “World Host” Customer Care.
The programme has been successful in a number of different settings. It has proved adaptable and can suit many different needs, with various organisations providing funding. For example:
- Young people facing barriers, funded by North Ayrshire Council
- HMP Dumfries, funded by Holywood Trust and The Bestway Foundation
- Special Schools partnership, funded by North Lanarkshire Council
Whilst Springboard trainers deliver workshops and provide continued support, the addition of practical cookery training from professional chefs, the wearing of chef’s whites and safe use of equipment offer a real experience of a working commercial kitchen. On industry visits participants also get the chance to meet employers and staff, ask questions and see behind the scenes on venue tours.
